Yesterday on English Quest‘s Twitter feed we asked:

In football, which club did ‘Old Big ‘Ed’ not manage for a full season? a. Derby County b. Leeds United c. Nottingham Forest

The answer is “Leeds United”.

If you’d been asked this question while playing the family board game English Quest you’d have noted a black dot next to the question.

This means there’s a further explanation in the Quest Book that accompanies the game. Simply locate the question to find out more information about the answer.

In this case we learn:

Brian Clough was known by the name he used for himself, ‘Old Big ‘Ed’. He won the First Division title with both Derby County and Nottingham Forest and also won the European Cup twice with Nottingham Forest, but his managerial career with Leeds United in 1974 lasted only 44 days.

I don’t know about you, but I had no idea that Clough gave himself the nickname ‘Old Big ‘Ed’, the “‘ed” meaning “head”…Gifted manager, but yes, a bit of an old big ‘ed!
